“I would recommend Dougie as an excellent instructor to anyone, but especially to people who are lacking confidence or neurodivergent or coming to driving late. He is such a thoughtful and knowledgeable instructor, as well as friendly, patient and reassuring. I came to driving late and when I started with Dougie I was experiencing a crisis of confidence in my ability. My previous instructor had been nice but I felt like he thought I was never going to learn. Dougie is really friendly and genuinely never seemed in the least bit annoyed, in fact, he often help me figure out how to get me past a problem and reassured me as to how I was getting on. I found it really helpful that Dougie would explain how the car works and why doing something one way is better or safer, drawing it on his wee white board or sharing videos or photos to further illustrate the point. As someone who never had a car growing up, he taught me to read the road, all the small things you might not realise that help you prepare in time so that you don't have to juggle 20 things at once. I think he helped me find time and space in my driving as well as confidence. He taught me to "drive to what you see" rather than expecting me to memorise the roads. And then tbqh we just had a lovely time chatting and sharing stories too, he is interested in everything! When I sat my test it was a very early start and cold and icy and I was so nervous, when I passed I am not sure who was the more delighted, Dougie or me. In my first week I had to do an emergency trip to a vet I didn't know during a stormy night, and that weekend I drove across the country in sleety weather. I felt confident in my ability to do both despite not knowing the roads, because of the techniques I learnt from Dougie. Many thanks for everything Dougie!”
