“Nice place, great location and the staff very friendly. The food (we had cheese toasties and oysters) was good but felt a lot of things on the menu were expensive. For example, a toastie costs £17 with no side salad and a coffee over £5. The going rate in most other Marchmont cafes is £9 and that includes a cup of soup. Will be back if they lower their prices.”

“Really happy Starter Culture has opened in the neighbourhood. The cheese board was excellent - good variety, really well paired with the wine, and the quality was spot on. Service was great too. Staff were attentive and quick without hovering. Cocktails were also very solid. I’m quite particular about coffee and can honestly say theirs is very good. Since the recent price drop I’ve started getting my weekly coffee from there, so it’s become a regular morning stop for me. The only downsides for me were pricing on the cheese boards - they’re on the expensive side compared to other places in princes street offering medium-to-large boards around the £35–£40 mark - and the pastries didn’t taste particularly fresh when I tried them in the morning. Overall though, it’s a strong addition to the area and I’ll definitely keep going back - especially for the coffee and evening drinks.”
