“I had an unpleasant interaction with a member of staff here while I was out in Dalkeith Park. She was walking several dogs and noticed I had taken a couple of photos of them. If she had politely asked me not to photograph the dogs, I would have been perfectly happy to stop — that would have been a reasonable and respectful conversation. Instead, the staff member (Australian) was immediately confrontational and demanded that I stop taking photos, insisting that I “had to” and that I was required to delete the images. She also made several comments that I found disappointing and wildly inappropriate. For clarity, in the UK it is legal to take photos of people or animals in a public place where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. I was standing in a public area and was not doing anything unlawful. While I understand that someone might prefer their dogs not to be photographed, the way this was handled — with demands rather than a polite request — was unnecessary and quite rude. This interaction left a poor impression of the professionalism of the staff member involved. A respectful conversation would have resolved the situation immediately, but instead the tone was aggressive and confrontational. I hope the business reminds staff that situations like this should be handled politely and professionally. Thankfully her colleague was much more respectful to people around her, and I have deleted the photos. Disappointing.”
